Mesereau, Ephraim & Villaraigosa (MEV) Free Legal Clinic The Mesereau, Ephraim, & Villaraigosa (MEV) Free Legal Clinic is the brainchild of Attorney Thomas A. Mesereau. Jr. and Reverend Dr. Fredrick O. Murph of Brookins Community AME Church. MEV is housed in Brookins Community Development Center at the Brookins AME Church (1900 W. 48th Street, Los Angeles, CA 90062). The primary vision of the legal clinic is to provide high quality information and referral services to the residents of the City of Los Angeles. There are no income restrictions. The clinic provides individual legal consultations with qualified attorneys for up to 20 minutes of free legal advice in criminal and civil law. In the past year, MEV has provided high quality legal information and referral services to over 8,000 low income residents of South Los Angeles. The clinic provides these prominent attorneys an opportunity to give back to the community at large. MEV also partnered with Public Counsel, the largest pro bono law service in the nation. The Public Counsel has provided the clinic with legal professionals who have assisted with the success of MEV. The MEV Free Legal Clinic provides the residents of South Los Angeles with seminars on Predatory Lending, Reverse Mortgages, and Credit Restoration just to name a few. MEV is dedicated to both the immediate and long term needs of its diverse clientele. St. James’ Episcopal Church Legal Clinic Susan Yu opened a free legal clinic at her church, St. James' Episcopal Church, in Los Angeles in 2006. The church is located in the heart of the Miracle Miles/Mid-Wilshire district, on the northwest corner of Wilshire and St. Andrews, about one block west of Western Blvd. The clinic currently runs every last Sunday of the month from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. by appointment only. Judicial Appointments Committee Susan Yu serves on the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s Judicial Appointments Committee, which responds to Governor's requests to evaluate individuals under consideration for appointment to the Superior Court bench. Association for Asian American Studies Susan Yu serves as legal counsel to the Association for Asian American Studies, headquartered at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. As a national organization, the Association is comprised of professors, academic administrators, graduate and undergraduate students, and community leaders from North America. The Association was founded in 1979 and seeks to advance the highest professional standard of excellence in teaching and research in the field of Asian American Studies. California Polytechnic State University, Pomona Susan Yu donates her time to the California Polytechnic State University at Pomona' Professor for a Day program. As a Professor for a Day, she has lectured in the department of sociology in the areas of community and urban sociology, criminal justice, and sociology of culture. The program provides college students an opportunity to meet alumni and friends of Cal Poly Pomona and foster learning from professionals in the real world.
